Mitral valve repair ‘safe’ with low risk of operative death, surgeons confirm

Two-thirds of all patients with primary mitral regurgitation who undergo repair surgery have a predicted 30-day mortality rate of less than 1%, report US cardiologists.
Results from their nationwide cohort study suggest the procedure is safe, with a contemporary success rate of 94% for intended mitral valve repairs.
Researchers led by Dr Vinay Badhwar, from West Virginia University, say their findings and new risk model will aid clinical decision-making for the management of primary mitral regurgitation.
For the study, the team identified more than 53,000 consecutive patients from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database who underwent mitral valve repair from 2014-2020.
