Older type 1 patients hypoglycaemic for more than an hour per day

Older adults with type 1 diabetes typically spend more than an hour a day in the hypoglycaemic range, a new study suggests.
And those who aren’t aware their blood sugar is low can spend more than 100 minutes a day in hypoglycaemia, the authors say.
“The consequences of hypoglycaemia, particularly in older individuals, can be devastating,” and unawareness of hypoglycaemia remains a “major issue” for older patients with diabetes, said lead researcher Dr Anders Carlson, Medical Director of the International Diabetes Centre,Minneapolis, US in a media briefing at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans.
The study team analysed blinded continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data collected at baseline in a randomised trial assessing the effect of CGM on hypoglycaemia in 203 adults aged 60 and older with type 1 diabetes.
