Patient satisfaction ‘high’ for hidradenitis suppurativa surgery

Patients who undergo surgical treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa report high rates of satisfaction despite disease recurrence being common, a US study suggests.
The findings, from one of the few multi-ethnic patient populations studied, suggest the benefits of deroofing and excision outweigh the pain and discomfort associated with surgical intervention for the condition.
In a single-centre, retrospective cohort study, clinicians from the University of North Carolina’s department of dermatology analysed outcomes and recovery times following 194 procedures in 78 adults with hidradenitis suppurativa.
Most patients were women (83%) and had more advanced hidradenitis suppurativa as indicated by Hurley stage 3 disease or receipt of tumour necrosis factor inhibitor or antibiotics at time of surgery.
