Patients with stable knee OA can quickly deteriorate: study

Harvard researchers identify three typical trajectories, including late progression

Researchers have identified three typical trajectories for progression of knee osteoarthritis, including one where stable disease can rapidly progress, a paper shows.

The study from Harvard University, US, also confirms two other trajectories: ‘stable disease’ and ‘early progression’, the authors say.

Data from 1578 participants with knee OA enrolled in the US Osteoarthritis Initiative cohort were followed up for a mean eight years with regular X-rays of knee joint space width.

Some 6% of the people fell into a late progression category.
