The RACP has clarified that its position on e-cigarettes is unchanged despite apparent support in New Zealand for a legislative amendment encouraging smokers to shift to vaping to minimise harm.

In a statement last week, the college said it advocates for proven and registered smoking cessation technologies ahead of vaping and patients wishing to use e-cigarettes should be advised of risks and benefits.

“The RACP’s position on e-cigarettes is unchanged, though we acknowledge the different regulatory contexts and population health inequities caused by tobacco use in New Zealand and Australia,” it said.
