Some thrombectomy patients are at increased risk of reocclusion 24 hours after the procedure and have significantly worse outcomes, Swiss researchers report.

Their findings have prompted them to suggest waiting 10-20 minutes for a high-risk patient before performing the immediate post-procedure angiography to check there is no residual thrombus or stenosis.

The researchers, from Lausanne University Hospital, analysed records from 423 patients who had a successful mechanical thrombectomy between 2003 and 2018.

All patients had both an immediate and follow-up angiogram (between 12 and 48 hours post-procedure).
