Respiratory physician to repay $470,000 for inappropriate MBS claims

A respiratory physician will repay $470,000 to Medicare after admitting to inappropriately billing MBS items for numerous lung function tests and sleep studies.
The doctor, who has not been named, agreed to repay the money after being investigated by the Professional Services Review (PSR).
The watchdog reviewed the doctor’s claims for MBS items 11503, for complex lung function tests, and 12205, for lab-based sleep studies to assess treatment effectiveness.
It raised concerns that the doctor did not supervise the lung function tests or provide quality assurance.
