Severely insulin-resistant phenotype ‘benefits most from bariatric surgery’

Novel classification of patients with type 2 diabetes might facilitate better targeting of treatment, researchers say

Patients with severe, insulin-resistant diabetes stand to benefit more from bariatric surgery than any other group of patients with the disease, a groundbreaking study shows.

International researchers say their findings might lead to patients being offered treatments tailored to their disease phenotype rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

The findings expand on the novel data-driven classification of type 2 diabetes into five distinct disease subgroups that was first proposed in 2018.

Those in the severe insulin resistant diabetes (SIRD) subgroup have previously been shown to be particularly prone to renal impairment and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
