Two extra training sessions dedicated to serrated polyps can boost detection by more than one-third over four years in a population screening setting, Dutch researchers have found.

In a prospective trial, which was not randomised, 17 endoscopists from nine centres involved in the Netherlands’ national faecal immunochemical test (FIT)-based screening program underwent a 45-minute training session and repeated it three years later.

The intervention was an oral presentation, emphasising the importance of detecting serrated polyps and describing typical features of subtypes.

The results from the intervention group were compared with those of 100 other endoscopists who had not attended the training and were examining FIT-positive patients across the country.
