Structural valve deterioration ‘uncommon’ post-TAVI: Aus study

While reassuring, deaths in the follow-up made it hard to extrapolate findings to younger patients, researchers say

Fewer than 5% of elderly adults who undergo transcatheter aortic valve implantation have structural valve deterioration within 10 years, Melbourne doctors report.

Their study of all patients who underwent the procedure at the Alfred Hospital and Epworth Healthcare from 2008-18 suggests most patients will show stable valve parameters.

Recent randomised trials had demonstrated mixed results for long-term durability in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) due to differing endpoints and definitions of structural valve deterioration.

But Alfred Health’s deputy director of cardiology, interventional cardiologist Associate Professor Antony Walton, and colleagues said their results indicated “excellent valve durability”.
