Functional abnormality is the most common abnormal finding on defaecography in chronic constipation, according to the first study to systematically review the imaging in chronically constipated patients.

In addition, the research shows that having more than one structural abnormality is surprisingly common, the UK-led investigators report.

They examined the barium defaecography images of 827 patients (88% female, median age 49 years) presenting at a single tertiary referral centre over a 30-month period with a primary complaint of chronic constipation.

All scored 12 or higher on the Cleveland Clinic Constipation Score (maximum of 30).
