‘Unique and unpredictable’ circumstances in newborn’s death, inquest hears

The death of a newborn at Sydney’s Liverpool Hospital was the result of a “disaster that cannot be trained for”, a senior obstetrician has told an inquest.
The coronial inquest was investigating the death of Everett Carleton in August 2018 following a complicated delivery, including placenta incision and umbilical cord transection.
His mother Kirsty Carleton had type 1 diabetes, immune thrombocytopenic purpura and Graves’ disease.
NSW deputy state coroner Carmel Forbes heard that Ms Carleton’s conditions were well-managed, and that she was frequently assessed during her pregnancy.
