Why it’s ‘high time’ doctors prescribed cannabis for endometriosis: Aus researchers

The experiences of patients and other clinicians should inform prescribing in this clinical setting, according to Western Sydney University researchers

Medical cannabis should no longer be ignored as a legitimate treatment option for endometriosis-related pain, according to Sydney researchers.

Given various ‘shortcomings’ of current pain management strategies and increasing rates of self-medication with illicit cannabis, doctors have been urged to consider cannabis products in affected women.

“We should not be leaving people in pain while we wait for higher-level evidence,” said Associate Professor Mike Armour and PhD candidate Justin Sinclair, from Western Sydney University.

Writing in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the pair made the case for more widespread prescribing of medical cannabis for endometriosis.
