A woman in her 40s developed severe pemphigus vulgaris just five days after her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, the treating doctors say.

The clinicians reporting the case believe this is the first documented instance of a patient developing the rare autoimmune condition shortly after having the mRNA vaccine.

The woman was referred to the dermatology department of the Charité-Universitätsmedezin, a teaching hospital in Berlin, with an outbreak of painful non-healing erosion of the oral mucosa.

The patient, a woman of Asian ethnicity, reported that the lesions had appeared in mid-January, just five days after she had received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
