Now is the time to increase hep C testing efforts: Burnet Institute

Most treatments are being prescribed for older cases

GPs may have heeded the call to boost prescribing rates for hepatitis C infection, an analysis of PBS data suggests, however, separate modelling reveals there is still room for improvement when it comes to testing practices.

Published in the Medical Journal of Australia, the PBS data show GPs wrote 44% of all prescriptions for PBS-listed direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy between March 2016 and March 2020.

In contrast, only 1%-2% of the HCV infected population were being treated prior to 2016 and none by GPs, according to other data published in the 2020 HCV consensus statement.
