A cardiologist has issued a new reminder to GPs to check their own blood pressure, after finding that many are ignoring their cardiovascular risk factors and putting their health at risk.

Last year, Dr Om Narayan announced the results of the GP Health Initiative Report, a survey of 301 Australian GPs who typically worked in clinics across the country. It found only one in seven GPs self-monitored their blood pressure annually.

“I have reflected a lot on what we learned from this survey, and I think there is probably a culture of stoicism in medicine that may dissuade doctors from self-care,” says Dr Narayan who works as the clinical lead for the hypertension clinic at the Northern hospital.
