Prescribing type 2 diabetes drugs: a guide-on-a-page

This simple prescribing guide was created by Associate Professor Gary Kilov as a useful clinical decision support tool to assist GPs with the selection of second and third-line agents to treat type 2 diabetes.
Informed by the latest clinical guidelines and PBS reimbursement criteria, it provides GPs with a choice of directions in a format that is easy to navigate and implement.
Type 2 diabetes medication used in Australia is led by eight drug classes. However, for clarity Dr Kilov’s prescribing guide focusses on the six major classes used in primary care.
“This guide is a straightforward approach to prescribing treatment for type 2 diabetes in the presence of patient comorbidities, preferences and tolerability concerns,” says Dr Kilov, who is a founding member of the RACGP Diabetes specific interest group and the Primary Care Diabetes Society of Australia.
