GPs should follow international guidelines on hypertension because Australia’s current guidelines are out-of-date.

This is according to two of the country’s leading experts on blood pressure management, who say the local guidance is now seven years old and no longer reflects the best available evidence.

Professor Alta Schutte and Professor Markus Schlaich argue this gap has left GPs and other clinicians “high and dry” and has likely contributed to suboptimal management of elevated BP in the community and a plateauing of control rates.
