A GP guide to Botox for movement disorders

Need to know:
Botulinum toxin has been utilised in the treatment of movement disorders since the 1980s.
Three botulinum toxin A products are available in Australia (Botox, Dysport and Xeomin), and are PBS-listed for the indications of blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, cervical dystonia and spasticity in addition to chronic migraine and urological uses.
Provision of these treatments requires additional training and expertise, and referral to a movement disorder specialist neurologist or rehabilitation specialist is recommended. Some ophthalmologists treat blepharospasm with botulinum toxin.
