Can certain foods help to eradicate H. pylori?

Fifty per cent of the world’s population is estimated to be infected with Helicobacter pylori acquired in childhood.1

Triple therapy is first line and involves PPIs plus amoxicillin and clarithromycin, or a bismuth-containing regimen.1,2

However, antibiotic resistance may require second-line therapies. Researchers are now exploring the effect of food on H. pylori and this may form an important untapped adjunct therapy in the future.

H. pylori infection in asymptomatic non-Indigenous Australians ranges from 15% to 30%,3,4 but is significantly higher in  Indigenous Australians and migrants.4,5
