COVID-19 vaccines: An update on the safety and effectiveness data

The latest COVID-19 vaccination effectiveness and safety data from around the world have implications for Australia’s vaccine rollout

The COVID-19 vaccine landscape is changing every day.

SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC) have progressively swept the world. First, the D614G variant, which was globally dominant from February to December 2020, was displaced by the Alpha, Beta and Gamma VOC.

Now, the Delta variant is rapidly displacing all other VOC and fast becoming the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant in circulation around the globe (see table 1).1

The Delta variant is highly transmissible, around 50% more so than the Alpha variant, with a secondary attack rate of at least 12% in household contacts and 7% in non-household contacts.2
