A GP guide to functional neurological disorders

In all medical specialities, we often see patients with symptoms for which we cannot find an underlying pathology.1,2
Functional disorders in general account for one in five presentations in the primary care setting.3
Among neurology outpatients, 30% have symptoms that are ‘not at all’ or only ‘somewhat explained’ by organic disease.4
Common neurological presentations of these functional neurological disorders (FNDs) include weakness, abnormal movements such as tremors, sensory disturbances, and episodes of altered consciousness or loss of consciousness that can look like epileptic seizures or syncope.
