This article offers a brief overview of some commonly encountered paediatric orthopaedic conditions: developmental dysplasia of the hip, pulled elbow, slipped capital femoral epiphysis and Perthes disease.

The information was drawn from clinical articles previously published by Australian Doctor Group:

This refers to a spectrum of conditions where the femoral head has an abnormal relationship to the acetabulum, resulting in an unstable hip: instability (the femoral head slides in and out of the socket), subluxation and dislocation.

Hip dysplasia and instability may also occur in association with various syndromes, for example, Down syndrome, or in neuromuscular conditions such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy.
