GP management of endometriosis
Early diagnosis and management of this increasingly common and potentially debilitating condition can reduce disease progression and improve quality of life for affected women

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition secondary to the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus.1
The prevalence of the condition appears to be increasing. According to the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, 14% of women born between 1973 and 1978 were estimated to have been diagnosed with endometriosis by age 44-49.
In a younger cohort in this study, born between 1989 and 1995, 8.8% were estimated to have been diagnosed with endometriosis by age 26-31. Of women in the younger cohort who had turned 31, 9.2% were estimated to have been diagnosed with endometriosis compared with 6.9% of women in the older cohort at the same age.2
