Need to know:

Breast density is a topic of intense research and discussion. This article will discuss how breast density is defined, why it is important and how it may be incorporated into breast cancer screening recommendations.

Dense breast tissue is an independent risk factor for breast cancer, and reduces the sensitivity of mammography. However, there is a lack of guidelines for how to notify and advise women with dense breasts. Undergoing supplemental screening with breast ultrasound and/or MRI is an option, but it has potential harms.

The information in this article aims to help GPs support women with dense breasts as they consider their options for breast cancer screening.
