LOCAL medical associations, which once provided representation at many different levels, are a critically endangered species.

While they are one of the forums where GPs and specialists can meet, only a few remain active.

As general practice changes, so do the referral patterns to specialists, who are not immune to what is happening in general practice. Their referral base is constantly and quickly altering. 

There are increasing numbers of specialists, and a trend towards sub-specialisation. Large medical centres have more of their own in-house specialists. A full and rewarding career will not
