Brain injury prevention need in contact sport

Researchers analysed 13,000 brain injuries in individuals aged five to 19 years from 1990–2009, finding ice hockey accounted for 44% of the injuries, soccer for 19%, baseball 15% and basketball 11.6%.

“This [study] shows that body contact is still an area where we need to make major inroads to preventing brain injuries,” said lead author, neurosurgeon Dr Michael Cusimano from St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto.
