Call for anti-statin TV program to be pulled for public safety

The Catalyst program, ‘The Heart of the Matter Part 2 – Cholesterol Drug War’, will screen on Thursday night and is subtitled, ‘Do statins really reduce your risk of heart disease?’

It follows ‘The Heart of the Matter Part 1 – Dietary Villains’, screened last week, which branded the role of saturated fat and cholesterol in heart disease as one of the biggest myths in medical history.

Emily Banks, professor of epidemiology and public health at the Australian National University, wrote to the ABC in a private capacity warning that the program might cause people not to take their statins, according to the ABC’s PM program.

If the program goes ahead, and undermines statins, there will be people who didn’t have to die from a heart attack "who will die reducing use of statins", she told the program.
