Children with families on income support will need GP check

FAMILY tax benefits for welfare recipients could soon hinge on parents having their children complete the Government’s controversial Healthy Kids Check before the children start school.

The measure, a Labor election promise, was contained in legislation introduced to Federal Parliament last week and will operate from 1 July.

The legislation comes despite debate over how appropriate the checks are and questions raised by expert groups, including the RACGP, which last year snubbed the checks in its Red Book.

The requirements will apply to an estimated 92,000 children.
