Chronic cough reduced by gabapentin

In a group of 62 patients who failed to respond to a range of other treatments, researchers found those randomised to receive gabapentin (1800mg daily) had sustained improvements in cough-related quality of life compared to controls taking a placebo over an eight-week trial.

The study, funded by the NHMRC and Hunter Medical Research Institute, suggested gabapentin was a potential new treatment option, lead author Dr Nicole Ryan said.
