The Cinderella effect: new shoes offer relief for arthritic knees

A comfy new pair of walking shoes is all it takes to give patients with arthritic knee pain a bit of relief, an Australian study suggests.

Dubbed the ‘Cinderella effect’ in an accompanying editorial, Victorian researchers have found that specially designed ‘unloading’ shoes with modified soles are no more effective in relieving knee pain and physical function than a new pair of conventional walking shoes for those with knee osteoarthritis.
