Deaths from shark bites rise around the world

Total attacks were on par with recent years – with most in the USA (29), Australia (11) and South Africa (5) – but deaths went into double digits for the first time since 2000.

Deaths occurred in Australia (3), Reunion (2), the Seychelles (2) and South Africa (2), with one each in Costa Rica, Kenya and New Caledonia.

Surfers accounted for about 60% of attacks followed by swimmers (35%) and divers (5%), according to an update this month to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.
