Fears drive parents away from GPs

Parents are taking children with minor illnesses to emergency departments because of misperceptions GPs are too busy or costly.

Almost 90% of lower urgency presentations from children aged 0-4 at EDs are for conditions such as earache, mild fever, and slight cough, according to an analysis of data from 38 Victorian hospitals between 2002 and 2013.
