1. The ‘bionic pancreas’
SCIENTISTS from Boston University have developed a ‘bionic’ pancreas system that uses continuous glucose monitoring along with subcutaneous delivery of both rapid-acting insulin and glucagon.
Their artificial pancreas automatically makes a new calculation about insulin and glucagon dosing every five minutes — that’s 288 decisions per day.
The system consists of an iPhone 4S with an attached glucose monitoring device, two pumps, and reservoirs for insulin and glucagon.
