Gardasil shots for boys begin

This year more than 280,000 boys will be eligible for the free vaccine.

In NSW, Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory boys and girls will receive the vaccine in Year 7 as well as boys in Year 9.

In Queensland Year 8 girls and boys will have the vaccine, along with boys in Year 10. In SA Year 8 girls and Year 9 boys will be vaccinated. In WA boys in Year 8, 9 and 10 will be immunised but girls will not this year because the program is being moved from Year 7 to Year 8.

Minister for Health and Ageing Tanya Plibersek said she was confident extending the program to males would reduce HPV-related cancers and disease in the future.
