There have long been campaigns encouraging doctors to think carefully before accepting gifts. Some of us are frustrated at the slow progress, but we seem well ahead of politicians. Our political leaders seem wilful to ignore plentiful psychological evidence that gifts induce bias, in spite of recipients’ sincere belief they are not so influenced.
