GP plagued by young woman's death in custody

A WESTERN Australian GP has told a coronial inquest she is plagued by the death of a young Aboriginal woman in custody and wonders whether she could have done something differently.

Ms Dhu, whose first name is not used for cultural reasons, died two days after she was locked up at South Hedland Police Station in August last year. She had failed to pay fines totalling $3622 for offences including assaulting police.

Ms Dhu, 22, died of staphylococcal septicaemia and pneumonia during her third visit in as many days to the Hedland Health Campus after an infection in her fractured ribs
