Heroin overdose deaths on the rise again: new data

FROM 2010 to 2012, the death rate from heroin overdose doubled from 1.0 to 2.1 per 100,000 across 28 US states, while fatal overdoses from opioid pain relievers fell from 6.0 to 5.6 per 100,000.

Decreases in opioid-related deaths were not associated with increases in heroin death rates, researchers noted.

“The findings indicate a need for intensified prevention efforts aimed at reducing overdose deaths from all types of opioids,” they noted.

“Increasing use of heroin is especially concerning because it might represent increasing injection drug use.”
