“The sheer number of people engaged in informal recycling in the Agbogbloshie scrapyard makes it increasingly unthinkable politically to eject them from that location,” according to the United Nations University.

“Any solution must recognise their role and focus on improving health, safety and environmental standards.”

Experts calculate that, from 100,000 mobile phones, some 2.4 kg of gold, 900 kg of copper and 25 kg of silver – worth around US$250,000 ($241,000) – can be extracted.
