How the referral culture of general practice sets us up for failure
Should GPs aim to refer patients early, or try to manage complex health issues themselves, before passing patients on to other specialist colleagues?
It’s a question I have asked myself often in recent years as I have moved around practices and so have been ‘the new kid on the block’ many times.
And I see a lot of GPs trying to treat conditions that in my view need specialist care. After a while, either the patient or the GP gets sick of it, and the process stops for a while, until another GP decides to pick up the baton.
