Impaired mobility an indicator of functional decline

After a literature review spanning 27 years they concluded regular physical activity and exercise including resistance training were important for healthy ageing.

Reduced mobility, such as inability to walk up 10 steps, should raise a red flag for doctors as it is often a forerunner to functional decline and inability to carry out daily tasks, lead author Dr Cynthia Brown said in a media statement.

Elderly patients should be asked if they are able to walk up stairs or have difficulty walking several city blocks, she suggested.
