Legal euthanasia could be just around the corner

In a commentary in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, they note the Supreme Court is poised to consider a case positing that laws prohibiting euthanasia and assisted suicide may violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The medical community needs to grapple now with issues flowing from possible legalisation of physician-assisted death, including provision for conscientious objection, protection of vulnerable patients such as the depressed, and equity of access to palliative care to safeguard choices, the commentary said.
