Lift three-parent IVF ban

Australian legislation bans research involving human embryos containing genetic material from more than two people.

The UK recently announced that mitochondrial replacement (MR) techniques would be made available to women at risk of mitochondrial disease, a group of more than 100 genetic disorders that impair mitochondrial function and can cause organ failure.

MR techniques involve inserting the nuclear material of a prospective mother and father into a donor egg with the nucleus removed but retaining healthy mitochondria.
