MBS items for cardiac resynchronisation expanded to mild CHF

MBS items for cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices capable of defibrillation (CRT-D) should be expanded to include patients with mild chronic heart failure (NYHA class II), a government advisory board has recommended.

Patients with mild CHF may currently receive an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD), but evidence supports a change in therapy to include CRT-D in certain groups of patients, according to the Medical Services Advisory Committee.
