Mining funds could help in GP shortage crisis

The president of the AMA (WA), Dr Richard Choong, said with around 21 GP positions advertised for the region at the time of press, the problem required a broad approach and was not just a matter of more money.

Local councils were last month reportedly in negotiations with mining companies as part of efforts to secure additional funding to attract doctors to the area.

While he agreed that mining companies had a responsibility to support health services in the regions in which they operate, Dr Choong said money was only part of the solution.
