Move to phase out medical devices using mercury

WHO wants to see countries phase out thermometers and sphygmomanometers which contain mercury and will also work towards reducing dental amalgam and the use of mercury-laden topical antiseptics and skin-lightening cosmetics.

“Mercury is one of the top 10 chemicals of major public health concern and is a substance which disperses into and remains in ecosystems for generations, causing severe ill-health and intellectual impairment to exposed populations,” WHO director-general Dr Margaret Chan said in a media statement.
