New protocol allows early discharge for 50% of chest pain patients

More than half of ED patients with chest pain can be classified as low risk and safely discharged within two hours using a new diagnostic protocol for acute coronary syndromes developed by Brisbane clinicians.

The new protocol more than doubles the proportion of patients who may be discharged early compared to other diagnostic protocols, its developers say, and this could reduce ED overcrowding and health costs.

The Emergency Department Assessment of Chest Pain Score (EDACS) protocol when combined with troponin and ECG results identified 51% of chest pain patients
