Objecting doctors need to inform patients
In updated advice on conscientious objection, the AMA said doctors need to take whatever steps necessary to ensure patient access to care was not impeded.
The publication of the position statement last week follows controversy over the right of doctors to refuse to refer women seeking abortions to other doctors known not to have an objection. A Melbourne GP, Dr Mark Hobart, admitted refusing to refer such cases on as required under Victorian law, and became the subject of an investigation by the Medical Board of Australia and AHPRA.
