Older mothers have higher risk of having children with autism

Researchers looked at 25,687 cases of autism spectrum disorder in 16 epidemiological papers, finding not only that older mothers were more likely to have children with ASD but also that mothers younger than age 20 had the lowest risk.

The study also found a stronger association between maternal age and an increased risk of autism cases in male children. 

“The study makes us confident there is an increased risk for autism associated with older maternal age, even though we do not know what the mechanism is,” said the research leader Sven Sandin, from the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, and King’s
