One in 20 UK nurses fear losing their job

UK NURSES are feeling the strain of funding cuts to the National Health Service (NHS) with one in 20 nurses expecting to lose their jobs in the next 12 months, according to a national survey.

The Royal College of Nursing’s (RCN) annual employment survey showed that around 15,000 nurses and healthcare assistants in the NHS expect to be made redundant, with a further 7% expecting to receive pay cuts.

More than half reported they were already too busy to provide the kind of care they would like and nearly a third said quality of care was decreasing.

The RCN is now calling for safe staffing hours and will be tabling an amendment on the issue as the Health Social Care Bill progresses through the House of Lords.

The RCN’s annual survey covers almost 8000 nurses, including more than 6000 working in the NHS.
